For a townhome, a condo with a ground floor terrace or any house where the yard is spoken for, a Clearlight infrared cabin is the answer. The Sanctuary 1 and Sanctuary 2 plug into a standard household circuit, assemble in an afternoon in a rec room or spare bedroom, and heat you directly rather than the room. The Sanctuary 2 at $11,795 with a Chill Tubs Essential beside it turns a corner of the basement into a full hot and cold routine. Runners, hockey parents and people who spend ten hours a day at a desk in the tech corridor keep coming back for this setup.
Out in Woolwich, Wilmot and Wellington County the picture changes. A rural lot has room for a Serenity outdoor cedar sauna, and a farm property often has a woodpile already, so a wood burning heater makes sense and needs no electrical at all. The Serenity Sauna is $17,495 with the heater sold separately, and the smaller Serenity Mini is $14,995. Place it where the snow does not drift against the door, give the roof a pitch that sheds a snowbelt winter, and if you choose an electric heater have a licensed electrician run the dedicated circuit and get the ESA inspection.
Older homes need a bit more planning. Century houses in Stratford, Galt and downtown Guelph often have basements with low ceilings and stone foundations, so bring your ceiling height and door widths when you visit and we will tell you which Clearlight cabins fit. Infrared runs dry, so it does not add humidity to a finished basement the way a steam room would, but a bit of ventilation keeps the space fresh. For an outdoor build, check with your municipality about accessory structure permits and setbacks before you pour footings. Both types are set up on our floor so you can sit in each and feel the difference.
Saunas Questions
Will a Clearlight cabin fit in a low basement in an older Stratford or Galt house?
Usually one of them will. The Sanctuary 1 and Sanctuary 2 are the most compact cabins we sell, and the corner model Sanctuary C uses space differently again. Measure your finished ceiling height and the narrowest doorway or stair turn on the way down, bring the numbers in, and we will match a model to the room.
Does an infrared sauna cause moisture problems in a finished basement?
No. Infrared heats the body directly and runs at a much lower air temperature than a traditional sauna, with no water thrown on stones, so there is no steam to condense on cold walls. A door left open after each session and normal basement airflow is all it needs. Many owners here put the cabin on a basement floor without any special flooring.
How does a Serenity outdoor sauna hold up in snowbelt winters?
Western red cedar handles wet and cold well, and the cabins are built for Canadian weather. Site it so the door faces away from the prevailing wind, keep a path shovelled, and knock heavy snow off the roof after a big storm. Owners in Elmira and Fergus use theirs most in February, when the contrast with the air outside is the whole point.
Wood burning or electric heater for a rural lot?
If you already cut or buy firewood and like the ritual, a wood burning heater gives the hottest, most traditional sauna and skips the electrical entirely. If you want to press a button after work, an electric heater on a dedicated 240V circuit installed by a licensed electrician heats up on a schedule. Both are shown on the Serenity models in the showroom so you can compare.
Do I need a permit for an outdoor sauna in the townships?
Possibly, depending on the footprint and how the township classifies accessory buildings. Woolwich, Wilmot and Centre Wellington each have their own thresholds and setbacks, and a wood stove may bring separate clearance requirements. A call to the township building department before you order saves a lot of trouble later, and we can supply the cabin dimensions for your application.
